Legal Trademarks of Portuguese Contractors
The responsibility mark, manufacturing mark or equivalent is the identifying mark of the person responsible for placing the article with precious metal on the market and reproduces a private design and a letter of the given name , surname or company name, with the design and letter being visibly distinct and enclosed within a peripheral outline.
The hallmark reproduces the mark guaranteeing the legal fineness of articles containing precious metals, or indicates certain circumstances, and identifies the assay office using it by defining the perimeter, which consists, respectively, of a curved figure, or an irregular symmetrical octagon, depending on whether it is the Lisbon or Porto Assay Offices (see drawing of the marks). The symbol varies according to the metal.
